Speech Sound Disorders

Speech Sounds Disorders encompass sound errors caused by perception, motor speech difficulties, and phonological disorders. These children may have sound substitutions or placement errors and at times can be difficult for us to understand.

Receptive Language

Receptive language is our ability to understand what is being said to us. Children with difficulty with expressive language may have difficulty following directions, answering questions, pointing to or getting name items, and remembering things/stories that are told to them.

Fluency

Fluency is the continuity, smoothness,
rate, and effort in speech production.
When a fluency disorder is observed
we often hear sound and single
syllable word repetition, sounds prolonged,
and a stop in our speech.

Social Language

Social language is seen through our ability to use appropriate language and follow the rules of conversation. Social communication is done both with words and body language/gestures.

Expressive Language

Expressive language is our ability to express ourselves with words (or AAC). Children with an expressive language delay or disorder may not use as many words at their peers or many use smaller or ungrammatical sentences. They may have difficulty naming items, telling stories, or using the correct words.

Feeding

Feeding is a complex and intricate process that allows us to gain nourishment. Feeding difficulties may be caused by structural, motor, and sensory weakness or disorders.

AAC (Augmentative & Alternative Communication)

When a child is not able to communicate orally there are many high and low technology options that all them to communicate with others. Children can communicate with pictures, vocabulary boards, and/or voice output devices.
